   Will quoting the Bible result in being marked duplicate on Hubpages?
   
   One of my hubs is about how in the book of Matthew Jesus speaks about the Law and how it should be upheld.  Naturally I have copied a significant number of verses and then commented on them.  My comments out number the verses but only by about a 2:1 ratio.

   My own personal experience has been "Yes". Even the King James Bible which does not have a copyright (although the notes may be copyrighted) seems to be at risk. A few verses seem to be okay, but longer passages or many passages have been the reason for some of my hubs being discontinued. Hope that helps a little!

      Thanks lifegate, it is such a shame though I think it's a good hub but it really needs all of the verses to make it's point.

   With a ratio of 2:1, It will probably get flagged regardless of whether or not the KJV Bible is public domain.  Since its quoted passages appear on hundreds of other sites, your article will bear too much of a resemblance to them, from a robot's point of view.  That is Hubpages' main concern. I don't know what the acceptable ratio is; HP has never given a number.

   Hi Dreamjar,
   What I do is just give the chapter and verse, or incorporate my own paraphrase into my writing, and at the end of my hub I add a links capsule to the passages on Bible Gateway.  That makes it easy for my readers to find the passages I referenced.  I just open a new tab to Bible Gateway.com, type in the passage search, example: Genesis 1:1-6, and when it comes up I copy the URL.  Then I open a new hub capsule, click "add link" and paste the link there and save!  When my readers click on it, it takes them directly to the passage of scripture.  I do sometimes add single scripture verses but my commentary is pretty long, so I have never had a problem.  I also am careful to reference if I use a quote.

   I have several articles with Bible verses that were tagged as duplicate content. I had to re-post them in my article as a .gif in order to get the articles published. It's a little work, but it was worth the effort.

   I got nailed for this once. But since the majority of my hubs are about Christianity and the Bible, I quote a lot of scripture and in a few hubs long passages. I tried to appeal to them but they wouldn't budge. So I just highlighted the Scripture references and linked them to Bible Gateway.com. Spoiled the hub. But it was just that once. Go for it and if they flag you, work with them.

   Paraphrasing helps. I like @jamesrk's idea of GIFs (not JPGs, because of the artifacts around text).
   
   But I think articles should be written, not copy and paste. There's lots to say about scripture. Being humble helps you discover new things, but then sharing your discoveries helps others grow spiritually. I've seen some hubs that were 100% copy and paste. I can go to Bible Gateway for that. Add your unique insights. As imperfect as our viewpoints are, the discoveries we make might help others out of the dogma that has crippled so many.

   You can quote the Bible but your content has to be much more than a two to one ratio. I would advise that you go over and try to expand your content. One of my hubs did get flagged for this and it was explained to me that quoting the verses were alright but I needed to have at least three quarters of my own words in the hub so that it would not be flagged. I added more of my own words and the hub is up today.
   
   Try adding words to it so that you can still use the Scripture verses. I know that the verses are necessary and you need to have them.

   My understanding is that any author dead for more than 100 years is safe, because, publishing laws don't apply for these writers the same way they do on current living authors (I heard this once, but never bothered looking into it).  Additionally, as long as you use quotation marks " " to indicate that you did not write this, you're usually okay.  Last but not least, paraphrasing is a somewhat safer alternative than just duplicating the exact material.

      Hi John, I don't think they are concerned with copyright laws.  It is the rules of hubpages that we publish original material that is not elsewhere found on on the internet.

    HubPages will sometimes penalize you.  I have problems with this and my hubs are mostly on the Bible and I do the same thing as you do.  They may say "Duplicate".  I have a hard time trying to find where the duplication comes from and hence the hubs are not published. .

    No. I have quoted the Bible a number of times on Hubpages without being called on it. However, always remember to credit your sources. Since we did not write or publish the Bible, in any of its versions, we must credit our sources.

    If you have incurred a violation for what you did on the hub you mentioned, your hub will receive a corresponding icon or label or highlight which indicates your violation. Based on that, you can make your revisions. Otherwise, the said hub would be banned from publication until such time that you have it revised and re- published.
    
    I am not aware how much portion of the scriptures is allowable to be quoted per hub or article so as not to merit a revision-amendment-correction.
    
    You can try to experiment about it to find out for yourself.
    
    Otherwise, you will have to spend some time at the FAQ portion of Hubpages.

    So here is an update... I switched about half of the verses to links to Bible Gateway and did a word count of my words vs the Bible content and now have a true 2:1 ratio.  I underestimated and before it was more like a 1:1 ratio.  I will see how this goes over and see if it makes a difference.
